Travel Advisory: Temporary Bridge Closures and Bridge Openings Scheduled in Woonsocket

RHODE ISLAND, September 1 - On Friday night, September 11, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is scheduled to begin a process to temporarily close two bridges and reopen three others that had been closed for construction. The bridges are part of two multi-bridge rehabilitation projects underway in the City of Woonsocket.

The bridge closures and schedule are as follows:

Wood Avenue Bridge: RIDOT will close this bridge in the evening on September 11. It will be closed for approximately six weeks. The bridge crosses the Peters River and is located near the intersection of Wood Avenue and Diamond Hill Road. Drivers will follow the same detour used during a short-duration closure of this bridge earlier this year. All traffic will be detoured using Mill Street, Social Street (Route 126) and Diamond Hill Road (Route 114).

River Street Bridge: RIDOT will close this bridge the evening of September 11. It will be closed until the end of this year. The bridge crosses the Blackstone River near the intersection of River Street and Blackstone Street. The detour utilizes River Street, Singleton Street, Harris Avenue and Blackston Street for cars and pedestrians. Trucks will be directed to follow a longer detour into Massachusetts, using Main Street then Central Street in Blackstone and Millville, Mass., then Victory Highway (Route 146A) into North Smithfield and back into Woonsocket.

The bridge openings and schedule are as follows:

Diamond Hill Road Bridge: RIDOT will reopen this bridge on September 4. The bridge crosses the Peters River and is located near the intersection of Diamond Hill Road and St. Leon Avenue. It was closed in late June. RIDOT coordinated the closure of the Wood Avenue Bridge with the reopening of this bridge to limit the impact of closures and detours for Woonsocket residents.

Singleton Street Bridge: RIDOT will reopen this bridge on September 11. The bridge crosses the Blackstone River and is located near the intersection of Singleton Street and River Street. It was closed in early June. RIDOT coordinated the closure of the River Street Bridge with the reopening of this bridge to limit the impact of closures and detours for Woonsocket residents.

Privilege Street Bridge: RIDOT will reopen this bridge by the end of September. The bridge crosses the Mill River, located close to the Massachusetts state line. It was closed in mid-May for its demolition and replacement.

The repairs to the Wood Avenue, Diamond Hill Road and Privilege Street bridges are part of a $22.7 million project to address five bridges in Woonsocket. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in summer 2028. Work on the Singleton Street and River Street bridges is part of a $19.1 million project to rehabilitate the bridges and preserve their steel truss design. The bridges are owned by the City of Woonsocket.

All the work for this combined investment of $41.8 million in Woonsocket bridges was carefully coordinated with the City to limit the disruption caused by closures and detours as much as possible.

All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.
